How To Maintain your Car Wrap

Vehicle graphics and car wraps are a significant investment in your business. Therefore, it is important to keep them clean and well maintained. Doing this will ensure the 3M vinyl graphics on your car, truck, van or boat represents your brand in the best possible light for years.

Not only, will keeping your car graphics clean help make your business shine, but it also ensures the longevity of the graphics are extended significantly

Wash regularly

A key aspect to maintaining the condition of your graphics is to wash regularly. Contaminants such as bird droppings, tar, tree sap and dried rain allowed to sit on the vehicle for extended periods may prove difficult to remove and can cause damage long term, lessening the lifespan of your car graphics

How Should I Wash My Vehicle?

Rinse of dirt and grit by spraying your car with clean water. (Do not use pressure hose.)

Use a wet, non-abrasive detergent and a clean soft sponge, cloth or microfibre towel to scrub the dirt and grime off your wrap.

Rinse thoroughly with clean water

To reduce potential water spotting, immediately squeegee residual water and finish off with a chamois or clean microfibre cloth.

Be careful using commercial car washes, especially those with brushes as they trap dirt and rocks in the bristles. The use of a brush car wash may cause dulling, scratching or lifted edges on the graphics. Touch-less car washes or hand car washes are recommended for keeping your vehicle clean.

Avoid Harsh Chemical And Rough Treatment

Avoid the use of any chemicals such as bleach, solvents, oil-based cleaner, kitchen and bathroom cleaners, orange oil or engine degreasers.

Hand washing your vehicle is the recommended cleaning method for vehicle graphics. If you need to use a pressure wash on your vehicle, do so at a low temperature, and make sure your pressure is set as low as practicable. When spraying, do not focus the spray in one area or and keep the spray head at a safe distance.

Film Restoration

The following restoration recommendations will help keep your vehicle wrap looking their best.

  • Do not use abrasive polishes or cutting compounds.
  • Do not use any polishing or wax product on matte or textured films.
  • If there is wax or wax residue on the surface, use an all-purpose cleaner to remove.

We recommend the use of Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner or a 2:1 Ratio of isopropyl alcohol and water.

*Important Note: Do not allow cleaning solutions to soak in. Once applied, immediately rinse with clean water.

Store Indoors or Under Cover Whenever Possible

Just like paint, vinyl graphics degrade with prolonged exposure to the sun and atmospheric pollutants. This is particularly true in regard to horizontal surfaces, such as the bonnet, boot and roof. Whenever possible, store your car in a garage or in a shaded area during the day. If your graphics show signs of discolouration or turn brown, immediately contact Signs WA Joondalup for advice.

What about when I want to remove the graphics?

To avoid damaging the car, removal is best undertaken by your 3M Specialist trained applicators here at Signs WA Joondalup. Our applicators will expertly strip the vinyl graphics and return your vehicle paintwork to a pristine and clean condition.

If you do wish to remove the graphics yourself, you need a heat gun or hairdryer. Heat a small area of the graphics by moving the heat gun slowly over the vinyl, this will soften the material and the underlying adhesive to allow for the vinyl to be pulled back slowly. Continue to heat small areas of the vehicle and work the vinyl off in increments working at a slow pace. Be careful not to leave any glue residue behind.
